The idea started the same way a lot of serious builds do: with a simple question.

Why not turbo the Z06?

The car was fitted with turbos, but pushing the factory LT6 beyond its original naturally aspirated intentions eventually exposed one of its limitations and resulted in a failed head gasket.

At that point, the goal changed.

Rather than simply repair the engine and put it back together, the decision was made to build an LT6 capable of handling serious boost - with a foundation designed to be as tough as, or potentially stronger than, what Chevrolet created for the ZR1.

The engine was pulled by our friends at Boost District and sent to BoostLine Performance.

What followed was considerably more involved than ordering a collection of parts from a catalog.

Starting From Scratch

When the LT6 arrived, there wasn't an established catalog of proven high-horsepower parts waiting for us.

The engine was completely disassembled so every dimension, clearance, sealing surface, and unique feature of the LT6 could be inspected and measured.

And the LT6 is far from conventional.

Its 5.5-liter architecture uses a flat-plane crankshaft and a multi-piece block assembly, with the main fasteners passing through the oil pan structure. Building one for four-digit horsepower meant understanding those details before anything could be developed.

Custom Fasteners and Head Gaskets

Cylinder-head and main-cap retention were among the first areas addressed.

Factory hardware was sent to ARP as a reference so custom head studs and main studs could be developed specifically around the LT6 architecture.

Cylinder sealing was equally important.

Detailed rubbings were taken from the cylinder heads, block, and original gaskets and sent to Cometic, providing the information needed to develop a custom MLX head gasket specifically for the LT6.

Instead of adapting existing components, both systems were developed around the engine itself.

Building the Rotating Assembly for Boost

The factory LT6 carries approximately 12.5:1 compression, ideal for a high-rpm naturally aspirated engine but aggressive for a combination targeting roughly 1,500 horsepower under boost.

BoostLine worked with CP-Carrillo to develop custom forged dished pistons that lower compression to approximately 9.8:1 while providing a stronger foundation for increased cylinder pressure.

The piston design also required portions of the LT6’s flat-plane crankshaft counterweights to be turned down for proper piston clearance.

A set of custom Pankl titanium connecting rods completed the rotating assembly, creating a package designed around one goal:

Build an LT6 foundation capable of supporting approximately 1,500 horsepower.
